New deal for Chinese investment firm Tencent might prove huge for mobile Esports
The Chinese investment firm Tencent better known as the owners of League of Legends’ Riot Games and others, is in discussion to buy a major stake in Supercell Oy, the Finland-based developer of Clash of Clans and Clash Royale, according to The Wall Street Journal.
In case you didn’t know who Supercell are yet, Supercell is the Finnish company that developed Hay Day, Boom Beach, Clash of Clans, and Clash Royale. Clash of Clans has been one of the two most profitable mobile games in the last two years, according to Superdata.
According to WSJ, Supercell’s revenue grew from roughly €100 million in 2012 to over €2 billion in 2015. This year’s release of Clash Royale, which has been extremely well-received within the gaming community, is likely to only further grow the company.
Talks are only in the early stages and a deal is still very far down the line, but this move would be massive, especially for mobile esports. “Supercell’s founders, who can veto the deal, prefer to keep the company’s management under SoftBank given it gets complete autonomy, some of the people said,” states the report.
