HTC Esports boss doesn’t think VR Esports is ready yet
What does the future of esports hold? That was the question asked at the esports workshop hosted by Faceit and Intel last week. A roster of representatives from Twitch, Facebook, Cloud9 and more came together to discuss where they think esports is heading. Walter Wang, HTC’s Esports boss apparently believes we are still far away from actual VR competitive gaming.
The company’s Vive sits alongside Oculus Rift as the highest-end headset available, so it’s a little bit surprising to hear that from Mr. Wang who said “We’re really far away from esports in VR, There’s still no killer app and esports requires precision. The precision from the hardware isn’t there yet.”
Until we are ready for full VR gaming we can at least enjoy spectating from that point of view, as many tournaments are adapting VR for streams like the recent Intel Extreme Masters Oakland that allowed people from all over the world to immerse themselves with their supporting handhelds and VR headsets.
