Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Zombies Chronicles review – Worth the $30?

Ever since being introduced in Call of Duty: World at War as a secret mode, Zombies has catered to millions of fans worldwide with its fun and engaging gameplay constantly improving in new CoD releases. This made the Zombies mode a stable in video games world and one of the few highly-regarded extra contents.

This is where Zombies Chronicles comes, the additional mode that is releasing for, that’s right, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 giving many maps throughout the series a fresh coat of paint for the next gen of consoles. Now, you might wonder why would Activision release something for the two years old game rather than the more recent Infinite Warfare? Well, Treyarch said it’s a “love letter” to the fans of the mode and it’s something they really wanted to do, and we’re honestly glad they put the effort into it. However, with an off-season content like this coming with a big amount of maps you’re looking at a $30 on top of the Season Pass, so is Zombies Chronicles really worth half the price of AAA new releases?

Well, the answer to that is a yes and a no. Why? Simply put, it all depends on your previous experiences as a player and whether you’re familiar with what’s being offered here. If you’re a newbie then Zombies Chronicles is an absolute must at $30 if you’re a fan of Call of Duty. With its 4 player co-op gameplay in realstic and fictional places throughout history, mixed weapons between Black Ops 3’s arsenary and Zombies exclusive stuff, several few changes to shakeup the formula and of course eight remastered maps with gorgeous graphics, we think it’s a good experience and a lot of fun to be had.

This all sounds great, then why did i say “yes and no”? I’ve talked above about when you’d be enjoying Zombies Chronicles to its fullest, but in our opinion, the experience somehow feels too familiar that even the new paint doesn’t distract you from saying that you’ve been here, killed this, did that. Despite the few changes it’s just not worth it shedding a hefty $30 out of the gate for Chronicles simply because it’s still the same maps with all the shortcuts and easter eggs you played to death in previous installments. Now granted there are few interesting twists like Black Ops 3 gum-machine thing that gives you a boost to your abilities by spending in-game money, as well as all the sliding and jumping and Black Ops 3 mechanics, but they just don’t justify relieving the experience at a $30 price point. There’s nothing new here to gain despite the few hours of fun you’ll get with your mates in some quick matches.

Yes, Zombies Chronicles is still fun, and that’s what’s important isn’t it? It’s everything you remember but better, more refined, and remastered. The only thing here that dectates your purchase is whether you think you’re OK with spending $30 on a single expansion DLC or not. That we can’t answer.

The DLC was played on base PS4 and graphics are as good as we’ve seen in the past few installments on new gen. All maps look stunning compared to the past and there are no game breaking issues or bugs. For Xbox and PC players, you guys will have to wait for few weeks before the content is released as Activision didn’t announce when yet.
