German Social Democratic Party wants to promote Esports in upcoming elections
Second-largest German political party is looking forward to tap into esports in the upcoming federal elections, promoting the competitive gaming phenomenon in the country.
The SPD spoke about the growing importance of esports in Germany and Europe as a whole, and is going to examine the possibilities and ways of improving and adopting it.
Esports representation on this scale is considered an achievement for supporters, and it’s not the first time where the Social Democrats talk about the issue. A special event on the potential of esports was held in April 24 and was the first of its kind for the group.
Other smaller parties like Berlin Pirate Party tried to use the issue of esports in its campaign but failed at gaining recognition for competitive gaming as real sport by the German Olympic Sports Confederation, which has the last say on the subject.
Esports recognition shouldn’t be far off however, as more and more support is gained and with Germany being a hotspot for international tournaments with ESL’s headquarter being in Cologne as well as Riot’s EU LCS, not mentioning the business centers of famous teams like SK Gaming and mousesports.
