Team USA dominates China at Overwatch World Cup 2019
Yesterday, the US team won for the first time in the history of Overwatch tournaments, with an almost total domination of the competition this year to overtake several teams that were favorites to win the title of World Cup 2019
Over the past three years, South Korea has dominated the professional Overwatch arena with three World Cup victories, but it is time for a new star to shine in the skies as the US team made it to the top for the first time.
It was only a matter of time when the US team managed to beat former champions South Korea in the semi-finals. This does not mean that the final opponent, China, was an easy opponent.
Team USA:
- DPS: Corey Nigra (Washington Justice)
- DPS: Jay “Sinatraa” Won (San Francisco Shock)
- DPS: Kyle “KSF” Frandanisa (Los Angeles Valiant)
- Main tank: Matthew “Super” DeLisi (San Francisco Shock)
- Off-tank: Indy “SPACE” Halpern (Los Angeles Gladiators)
- Main support: Grant “Moth” Espe (San Francisco Shock)
- Flex support: Shane “Rawkus” Flaherty (Houston Outlaws)
The US run has been perfect since the group stage, where they effectively used the new meta 2-2-2 to win 4-0 against strong opponents, most notably Korea and France, where they came back to beat that first in the semi-finals losing in just one map, the only defeat they suffered during the entire tournament.
This was because they did not lose to the Chinese team in the final, despite the Asian team’s efforts to get any point against the American champions. It looked hopeless at the end of the second map, after a strong Chinese performance in King’s Row followed by a shattering morale thanks to a sweeping late push for the American team.
The third and final map saw the American squad extending total control of Dorado, both in attack and defense. Thanks to a great performance by Corey, Sinatraa and SPACE, the team managed to win an impressive result that made the title within their reach.
The winners not only received the grand prize money, but also won gold medals with “Sinatraa” voted T-Mobile MVP of the event, which is voted by the public on the pitch and through Twitch.
“It means the world to me obviously,” Sinatraa said. “But I definitely have to give it up to my team. Without them I would literally be nothing. I think Corey should have got MVP personally. Big shoutout to Corey who popped off, but yeah, I’m just happy.”
