A quarter of earth’s population will know about eSports in 2021, Newzoo predicts
When it comes to competitive video games and esports, and despite the great achievements and huge number of viewers online, this is still an emerging area that is not widely known among the general public of the world. According to a new study, this may be about to change over the next few years
According to Newzoo, esports research firm, the popularity of these digital competitions is expected to reach numbers we never imagined, with a new study revealing that more than a quarter of the world’s population will know about esports by 2021.
This is not the first time that the organization has predicted esports reach. It has previously talked about a figure of 1.2 billion humans having the knowledge of esports by 2017, a figure that has not only been achieved, but been surpassed at 1.4 billion.
Newzoo is also talking about 10 billion hours of video game content by 2021 as the firm continues to expand, and top 10 capitals around the world will have stadiums dedicated to esports, with the competitive video games beating both Tennis and Rugby in number of views. In fact, the report is not surprised to see deals for companies such as Nike with video game celebrities, as is the case with the elite athletes, which is likely to be inevitable with professionals reaching stardom as seen with Ninja and Faker.
It is noteworthy that the history of the organization is full of correct predictions. In 2017, it achieved four out of five predictions based on the current status of esports, including the number of people interested in the field of electronic sports reaching 145 million people and 190 million followers of competitive video games, While the only expectation that failed was about eSports going beyond the popularity of football and handball, which still needs more time, despite the inevitability of it coming one day.
