Best 10 life lessons Dota 2 teaches us
Look, when it comes to Dota 2, you either love it and put hundreds or even thousands of hours or you simply don’t care for it. Are you the first type? Then we’re sure you can relate to some of these life lessons that the popular MOBA teaches us.
- Always make sure you can see your enemies
Everyone has enemies. No matter how nice of a person you are, you’re going to be hated by someone eventually. You don’t want to be stabbed in the back someday, so it would be wise to keep track of what your enemies are doing. Pretty much the same goes in Dota 2, where buying wards and checking on the minimap often are the keys to winning.
- Sometimes.. it’s better to leave your friend die
We don’t know about you, but we know about that one friend who makes the dumbest decisions. Someday, somehow, he’s gonna ruin his life. You don’t want to be there with him when it happens. Just like how you don’t want to tower-dive with the Spirit Breaker on your team.
- In wars, get the medics
Healers are the backbone of a team – you don’t want to dish damage out onto an enemy Centaur Warchief only to have him healed back up with a well timed Hand of God. Take out the enemy healer first so that this doesn’t happen. Thankfully, in real life, the Geneva Convention makes shooting at medics a war crime.
- Teamwork does not ensure win over individual talent
One of the realities of Dota 2 is that even the most well-coordinated team of noobs will never beat a team of pros regardless of how disorganized they might be. Eventually one of them will farm enough to wipe your team faster than you can say “ULTRA KILL”.
- He who closes the deal reaps the rewards
When you last-hit a creep and get that sweet, sweet, gold, remember this important life lesson: Don’t work hard for nothing – make sure you are the one who seals the deal or you won’t get paid for your effort. Be smart.
- You can’t bring your fortune to your grave
Imagine you’re playing Lifestealer. You farmed and farmed, and finally saved up 3,000 gold for a Reaver. It has been a long farming journey in the jungle. You walk to the Secret Shop, and find the enemy Legion Commander and Crystal Maiden there. This was the last scene you saw before dying. You never get to buy your Reaver. You wish you’d bought something cheaper instead.
Moral of the story? Don’t live your life seeking some unattainable goal.
- You can’t have everything in life
The item slots in Dota 2 are a reflection of our paths in life. There are so many weapons and accessories to enhance your hero, but so little slots to carry them with. You’ve got to choose carefully and maximise your potential with the right items. Just like how you’ve only got one life and must choose your education and career wisely.
- If you’re not talented, you end up paying for everything
We all know the saying – “Nice guys finish last.” These ‘Nice Guys’ take people out on dates, end up paying for everything, and don’t get the girl in the end because they were just not good enough (in terms of looks, personality, career etc.) Just like the noob Dota 2 players whom everyone expects to buy couriers and wards every game.
- Don’t fight fair if you want to win that bad
This one might seem unethical but hey, want to win a fight? Initiate a gank.
- If you invent something successful, make a sequel
Back when Dota was still on Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, it seemed that everyone was playing it. If you did not play Dota, you were a weirdo. When League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth came along, it looked as if Dota’s (frozen) throne would finally be usurped. Today, while Dota 2 has yet to surpass LoL in terms of numbers, it has managed a comeback to become one of the most played games in the world again.
