Faces in Uncharted 4 consist of up to 500 bones

Naughty Dog has always been one of the developing studios that goes beyond limits when it comes to graphical technologies on Playstation consoles, and their next game is no difference.

Talking to one website, writer Josh Scherr and Lead designer Ricky Cambier made some comments on our hero’s last game from a technical standpoint. According to them, the new hardware that came with the release of the Playstation 4 opened new possibilities to push the visual fidelity further and more accurate representation of facial emotions.

Faces in Uncharted 4 will have much more details throughout the whole game. You will be able to move the camera around and see Drake’s face filled with struggle and effort thanks to the huge effort focused on showing emotions for characters. Compared to The Last of Us which had between 90 to 100 bones in faces, Uncharted 4 will be 300 to 500.

“Think about that, about how detailed Joel and Ellie’s pained facial expressions were, how well the game captured the respective actors’ – Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson – seminal roles. All that was achieved on the old tech.

“On older games, some of the animations might have been sampled at 10 or 15 frames per second to save memory. That would have just been interpolated by our code [to run at 30 in-game],” Scherr said.

“While that looked fine, we can now afford to record it at 30 frames per second so that the animation looks that much smoother.”

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End comes exclusively to PS4 next year.
