Hacking online games can now result in jail in South Korea

Punishments for cheating in online games were never that serious. Not enough to make hackers stop using their aimbots and trainers. From timely bans to revoking an account, it never really stopped hacking a game completely from existing on all servers.

This is bound to change in South Korea however, as a new law says that anyone convicted of doing so could face up to five years in prison (!) or $43,000 in fines. The law didn’t specify Esports but online gaming in general, and despite not being clear yet it most likely covers the creation and sharing of cheating software rather than its use.

The new law isn’t something to be surprised about as online gaming is a big thing in Korean culture. With many cases of cheating and match fixing recently it’s definitely welcome to apply a more serious tone towards hackers.
