Jennifer Lopez, Marshawn Lynch and more among NRG Esports newest investors
What’s in common between Jennifer Lopez, Marshawn Lynch, Michael Strahn, Marlon Byrd and Alex Rodriguez? They’re all now investors in one of the biggest NA organizations, NRG Esports.
The famous singer/actor joined her current boyfriend Alex Rodriguez in the latest celebrities investment in Esports as they join a host of athletes and personalities who are now part of the NRG family. The investment deal totals in at about $15 million dollars, according to ESPN.
Rodriguez, the retired Baseball legend after 22 years of playign with MLB, had already invested in NRG last year. The new deal increases his involvement and puts him as one of the company’s board members. Following in his footsteps is his now-girlfriend J.Lo, who’s one of the first female celebrities to invest into esports.
The newest celebrity investors join other popular former professional athletes who have also invested in NRG—including Shaquille O’Neal and Jimmy Rollins. The deal will be surely beneficial to the organization as it recently paid the reported $20 million franchising fee for Overwatch League, taking the San Francisco official spot at the league.
Announced alongside the investment is the full roster of Overwatch team, which includes players from Selfless, Immortals, LG Evil and more. The roster consists of Jay “sinatraa” Won and Matthew “super” DeLisi alongside André “iddqd” Dahlström, Daniel “dhaK” Paz, Dante “Danteh” Cruz, Andrej “babybay” Francisty, Nikola “sleepy” Andrews, and David “nomy” Ramirez.
NRG’s Overwatch League team will relocate to Los Angeles for the inaugural season, which begins in December with preseason matches. The first season itself begins Jan. 10 at Blizzard Arena Los Angeles.
