Longest running Esports league, StarCraft ProLeague discontinued
Korean Esports association KeSPA officially announced that the longest-running Esports event, StarCraft ProLeague is now discontinued. The decision came for a variety of reasons which include the decrease in the number of players as well as difficulties getting sponsors for the event.
StarCarft ProLeague was the longest running and biggest StarCraft event and it started its journey in 2003 with a goal of providing competing grounds to professionals. The decreasing relevancy of StarCraft caused by more dominant games like LoL and Dota2, match fixing issues, lack of sponsors and more resulted in this decision being officially taken.
“The decision to put the past 14 years behind us and discontinue ProLeague was a difficult one and it deeply saddens me to have to also bring you the news that KeSPA will be stopping its operations of ProLeague teams,” said Jun Byunghun, the KeSPA chairman.
Will this be a sign for the end of StarCraft’s competitive events? We hope the rumored “StarCraft HD” would provide the community with something they can hold onto until StarCraft 3 gets released.
