Midland University announces Esports as a varsity sport

Midland University had just announced they’re adding Esports officially to their varsity sports program, making the Fremont, California based university one of the firsts to do such step starting this fall.

The college’s team “The Warriors” will start to compete officially in the 2016-17 school year and it will have student-athletes on scolarships. The University will also offer free rooms for those accepted onto the team by June 30th. As for the competitions the team will enlist in, they will be playing League of Legends video game as a part of Collegiate Star League, which already has 200 competing institution.

“This is a rapidly emerging form of championship competition and we will pursue the same level of excellence we expect in the other 27 varsity programs we offer,” athletic director Dave Gillespie said in a statement. “We want to see all of our teams well coached, enhancing character, and building community.”

The university has started its search for the program’s first head coach. Midland also plans to improve its current gaming area with a state of the art, competitive gaming area.
