More than 1.5 million passwords stolen in a Dota 2 forums hack
Thanks to a long-existing exploit in a security algorithm used by the official Dota2.com forums, one hacker managed to steal over 1.9 million user accounts as well as converting over 80 percent of passwords, amounting to 1.5 million passwords.
The weakness of MD5, the used algorithm isn’t new. In 2012, LinkedIn was hacked and 6.46 million passwords were exposed due to the weak MD5 algorithm. The software’s author said then—over four years ago—that the scrambler is “no longer considered safe.” Why Valve was using this method is unknown in 2016.
The theft came in the lead up to The International 2016, the game’s global championship, which boasts over $20 million in prize money. We’re waiting for the official words.
