Overwatch returning Competitive mode detailed in new video
After the cancellation of Overwatch’s internal Competitive mode during its Beta modes, the team took it upon itself to reintroduce this part of the game after hearing from feedbacks and such. Today we got a taste of what’s coming in later update for the game.
In a new video director Jeff Kaplan talked about a number of key aspects of the mode. Each season will now be two and a half months, with a two-week break between seasons. Kaplan said they’ll be based on real-world seasons.
As for game format, Kaplan said that games previously would go too often into sudden death, around 35 percent of the time. Blizzard wanted to minimise this number. In addition, the sudden death round will now resolve on the same map you were playing.
For the maps that feature the Assault game mode, Kaplan said the team found those to flip pretty quickly and be highly dependant team fights for the attackers. Now, these maps will last longer to create a chance for a more balanced gameplay. As for Competitive Play’s ranking system, it will now focus on skill rating rather than progression. When the update is released, you’ll see players drop and gain tiers as the season goes on. There are also more tiers to fall into.
On rewards, Kaplan promised those who play the mode exclusive cosmetic rewards such as sprays and player icons. In addition, top players also get to unlock golden gun camos. For this and more, watch the video below.
