Overwatch World Cup Returning in 2017
As per its announcement page, it will be looking at the skill ratings for the top 100 Competitive players from each country. Rather than attempt to make the World Cup the pinnacle of competition, however – they’ll have the Overwatch League for that this year – Blizzard are instead sticking to the spirit of the original event.
Players from the top 32 countries will then assemble their 2017 Overwatch World Cup National Committee, consisting of three local experts charged with recommending roster picks for all stages of the competition.
Those lucky squads will move on to live qualifiers, meaning the top players from each nation will need to do their best to secure a spot in the tournament by bringing their best Competitive Play to the table.
Live qualifiers will be aired this summer, with group stage events held in Europe, North America, and Asia.
It may come as some relief to fans who saw their countries left out a year ago, which partially used a public vote system to include teams. There is the small problem that not every country has a level playing field, instances where the nearest Overwatch servers are located in another country.
