Riot Games announces its new plans for League Esports ecosystem
Perhaps the biggest criticism League of Legends is facing right now is about how low players earn through its competitions caused by how Riot Games is dealing with the whole Esports side of things. Despite being the most successful and largest Esports annual events the LCS still fails to present a decent amount of money to the players participating and training for long hours every day.
Recent comments by co-founder Marc Merrill only made it worse for Riot Games, as he placed the blames on other parties instead of acknowledging the shortcoming of his company and how little it was doing in the way of fixing it. However, it appears that Riot is finally taking the feedback into consideration as there will be changes to the ecosystem that will ensure a more fair competitive system for the players and their teams.
The most notable thing might be finally introducing ways for the players and teams to sell in-game items with their brands and signatures on it to get a cut of the revenue similar to Dota 2 and Smite. The other big change also draws from competition as Riot will now include 25% of the Championship Skins revenue into the upcoming World Championship prize pool similarly to The International, potentially giving the current $2.13 million prize pool a huge boost.
Up till this point it was only Riot Games that cashes in on the league’s massive viewership and popularity through sales of in-game items, however these new plans will now make sure that teams and players are also satisfied and eventually a better ecosystem for the whole Esports scene of the game.
