Steam platform doesn’t need ads according to Valve
Many websites and online services rely partly on advertisement on their main pages to cover the costs of hosting and continue their business, but that was never the case with Valve’s digital platform Steam.
Unlike PSN or Xbox Live, Steam never contained any form of ads in its webpage and client. Even though the idea was discussed at Valve but the team decided to ultimately to not include them in favor of the users’ experience.
“I don’t think anybody buys Doritos as a result of that,” said Valve’s Erik Johnson.“It would be a bad business decision, let alone just dumb,” he added, as well as saying that ads “don’t serve any value to costumers”.
Steam currently has more than 125 million active users from all over the world, with a peak of 9 million users signed in at the same time. As much money these numbers would bring, but Valve has always been about the users and their experience.
