This is why it’s hard for normal viewers to get into Esports
Even though many big companies are recognizing Esports as a major media phenomenon, with prizes bigger than some actual sports and researches conducting players as real athletes, there will still always be this one reason for why a normal viewer just can’t get into it.
Complexity. When the single most exciting thing about League of Legends is some special ability, or targeting a certain pixel in a hardcore CS: GO game, you have to expect the normal viewer to not gain the same amount of pleasure they would watching normal competitive sport with set goals. Like scoring in a football match or being the stronger opponent in a boxing or karate round.
This is why some commentators in Esports are getting so much fame. A part of the viewer’s enjoyment is being told when to get excited and why, explaining certain strategies or movements. However, something like this is still not enough for the normal viewer who has no idea what’s the importance of APM in Starcraft 2 or RNG in any other game.
There’s still hope however, Esports as a whole is gaining so much recognition and love all around the world thanx to the internet videos and streams, where everybody can master these complex rules whether they play the game or not. Also, the two most famous games in the scene LoL and DOTA 2 are in their place because of how easily accessible they are all around the world, being free and having low requirements so everyone can test them.
We don’t know what does the future hold for our sport, but it’s certainly going to be more successful with the inclusion of wider genres that everyone can get into like how a normal football viewer would enjoy a Rocket League match currently and what not.
