Yahoo to join Esports industry
Another big name started to see the importance of the newly-spread Esports division, as Yahoo network is about to dedicate a vertical specialized in reporting Esports with professional editors and writers.
Yahoo covers everything from politics to health and science, as it draws in millions of users a month for its news content. It also covers game news, but that mainly focuses on game reviews and has few esports-specific stories. The introduction of a dedicated vertical will mean more exposure for both Yahoo and the esports industry.
There’re no specific details on the type of coverage Yahoo will do, but it’s currently hiring professional reporters to cover games like CS: GO and League of Legends. This probably means we’ll see a live coverage of the worldly tournaments and events. The staff will be working full-time for 6 months with the ability to extend the period if the section does well.
Other news hint at both video and written content, so expect to see live reports and media news on both the website and its Youtube channel.
The move comes shortly after the well-known sports giant ESPN launched its own section dedicated for Esports. The industry is set for a rapid growth over the next few years, with one market research firm predicting revenue to reach $2 billion in 2018.
