Esports are now competing directly with UEFA Champions League
There’s no doubt that we all know what UEFA Champions League is and what it means to soccer. This competition between the strongest clubs in Europe has now become one of the largest sports events in history after the World Cup, but new numbers might indicate that Esports are too getting up there.
Some evidence to suggest that as much as fans love the Champions League, they may now be more interested in esports. Reports have indicated that more people bet on esports than the UCL this year. This betting activity will be focused on League of Legends, which remains one of the standard bearers in esports. A year ago, betting on League of Legends only amounted to about 39 per cent of the turnover on the Champions League winner. This year, that number will be closer to 160 per cent.
The numbers don’t necessarily mean that Esports viewers are more than those of UCL. However, they’re still interesting numbers to look at which indicate that Esports is being more and more recognized all over the world.
