HoN is getting its final major update next week, signaling an end of an era
The MOBA that once stood face to face before League of Legends in the past may be about to meet its end, after the developing company revealed the decision to stop working on new updates to Heroes of Newerth
HoN started its life in 2009 with a beta release in the same month that we got League of Legends in, and was aspiring to be a spiritual heir to the popular mod of Warcraft 3 Defense of the Ancients, or DOTA as you may know it. Although it introduced to an exciting style of play that was later known as “MOBA” with ideas inspired by DOTA, LoL had its full official version a few months before the Heroes of Newerth was ready, attracting a large number of players for LoL to slowly become the most popular game in the world, with the help of free to play business model unlike HoN, which asked its users to pay $30 in its first year before following the same principle as League of Legends to be offered for free.
However, HoN has always maintained a loyal fan base over the years despite its small size compared to LoL and Dota 1/2, but that is no longer enough. According to the news of the next major update, which is 4.7.3, we will not get any new content anymore.
“At this moment in time, patch 4.7.3 is planned to be the final patch that contains major content and major changes. Future HoN patches will generally consist of a small amount of balance changes and/or bugfixes, if they are deemed necessary.” said the notes accompanying the latest update, which seems to be the end of the road for the popular game, especially with the addition of tributes for people from development staff to the in-game tool tips as a sign of gratitude for what they have done over the years.
With most players of Heroes of Newerth moving to the League of Legends and Dota 2, the news may not really come as a surprise to many, but the remaining fan base is sure to be sad to hear that. However, we are sure they will keep the game alive for years from now with their own effort as we’ve seen with a number of classic online games.
Update 4.7.3 will be available for download on Tuesday, February 26, for PC platforms.
