New MBUX platform allows steering wheel to be used as a game controller inside the car
MWC 2019 saw some big companies showcasing their latest inventions, as is the case with Mercedes-Benz offering the first glimpse into what future “gaming” cars will look like
Mercedes-Benz introduced the new version of MBUX to visitors of the MWC 2019 exhibition in Barcelona to give an initial glimpse of the potential of the platform, where the new gaming features of MBUX include allowing you to play video games through the steering wheel of your car while it’s in still motion.
The new system turns the steering wheel into a controller attached to the dual 10.25-inch 1920×720 displayed, with one showing a Mario Kart-like game that you can control when the engine is turned off (of course) using the steering wheel, the gear shifter, the fuel and the stop pedals. Does this seem familiar to you? Of course, they are the key pieces of game consoles driving wheels… except that they’re the real deal here, and instead the game console is inside the car itself.
The madness does not stop here, but extends to the lighting and air conditioning systems that adapt to the state of the game, such as changing the colors of the lights depending on the game and blowing air in the face of the player when speeding with their virtual car to simulate reality .. Which is where you’re probably going to begin asking why not just drive your car instead of playing to simulate that experience?
However, we can not judge the experience at the moment because it is not yet available to users, and the game used for the presentation does not give the full idea of what can be done using the enhanced MBUX system, we are sure that we will see many different experiences in the future. However, this feature may be a fun activity to kill time while waiting in the car, but it’s definitely not something that we’d go out of our way to get. It’s just a fun addition right now.
