New studies reveal the connection between cognitive benefits and Esports
A new research done by educational research firm Foundry10 revealed its results recently, exploring the relation between video games and how the brain of expert players work as their cognitive responses increase with the increase of their experience.
Foundry10 goal is studying the effect of video games from the educational side, and the firm was interested in studying professional players in this domain until it reached some results based on deep interviews and several cognitive tests. Expert players where also compared to their casual counterparts in Dota 2 and such.
One of the two studies titled “Using an International Gaming Tournament to Study Individual Differences in MOBA Expertise and Cognitive Skills,” was made to study the relation between the player expertise and his cognitive skills. Players have been given tests where Foundry10 found out that there’s indeed a link between the increase in experience and brain skills.
“We observed a significant relation between gaming experience and response time on the location memory task… Furthermore, our results extend previous gaming research that suggests that individual differences in gaming experience are correlated with the speed of recalling spatial information from long term memory.”
As for the other study, it was related to the player’s recall performance of a game information. Research concluded with the result that said that Dota 2 experts process game-relevant information the same way that chess experts do.
