OpenAI artificial intelligence manages to beat Dota 2 top players
Despite the fact that Dota 2 has had bots for years now, their skill level has always been below what a human player would encounter in public matchmaking as they were designed for new players. Now, a new AI poses a threat to the top players in the world, as OpenAI managed to defeat some of them at The International 7.
A special kind of bot showed off its advanced skills against some of the world’s most well-known Dota players. OpenAI, created by a company founded by engineer and businessman Elon Musk, was showcased in KeyArena in a handful of one-on-one exhibition games. The bot went up against midlaners Danil “Dendi” Ishutin, Syed “Sumail” Hassan, and Artour “Arteezy” Babaev in three mid-only Shadow Fiend mirror matches. The bot destroyed its opponents, displaying a level of skill that is usually expected from humans. Executing high-level strategies, such as pulling creep aggro, denying creeps, and harassing with auto-attacks and Shadowrazes, the bot went past Dendi, Sumail, and Arteezy.
OpenAI was also taking challenges from random players at the venue, and what’s interesting is that for a prize of a free Shadow Fiend arcana 50 random players actually defeated the bot— an impressive feat considering that it was non-professional players who managed to figure out the bot’s weaknesses.
OpenAI is a project created by Musk, in order to combat the possibility of hostile artificial intelligence, which is something that Musk has been warning the scientific world about for years now and he has even gone as far as informing the United States government about its “dangers.”
The next big step for the project is to create a team of five that can compete against a full squad at next year’s International, according to OpenAI.
