Tokyo Game Show is doubling down on Esports this year

Tokyo Game Show, Japan’s biggest video game convention, and one of the biggest three expos in the world is increasing its spending on esports this year.

Tokyo Game Show is bringing a new esports tournaments series called “e-Sports X.” which will be taking place at its annual convention on Sept. 23 to 24 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba. Although TGS is no stranger to hosting esports events with five small competitions held in the past, this time however will be the company’s first large-scale dive into the esports scene by offering two stages with a maximum capacity of 500 viewers at the event, dedicated solely for the e-Sports X series, sponsored by Sony and Samsung.

Eight esports tournaments will be taking place in the following games: Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Street Fighter V, Monster Hunter Double Cross, and Counter-Strike Online 2, with four more yet to be announced.

Each of the eight tournaments will be invitationals, promising to include “some of the best teams around the world” taking part. These participants, as well as the prizepools for the tournaments, have yet to be announced.
