European team G2 advances and more during the second and last day of Knockout stage at Worlds 2018

few hours ago was the second and last day of Knockout Stage, that’s meaning the first stage of the Worlds 2018 is officially over, and the winners will advance to the next stage.

The four winners of each group, including G2 Esports, EDward Gaming, Cloud9, and G-Rex were seeded against the four second-place teams of SuperMassive Gaming, Gambit Esports, DetonatioN FocusMe, and Infinity eSports.

Teams that were in the same group were ineligible to face each other in the next stage. So G2 Esports couldn’t fast off against SuperMassive once again, for example.

Knockout Stage Draw:

Saturday Oct. 6

  • EDward Gaming vs. DetonatioN FocusMe
  • Cloud9 vs. Gambit Esports

Sunday Oct. 7

  • G-Rex vs. SuperMassive Gaming
  • G2 Esports vs. Infinity eSports

The second and last day of Knockout Stage:

G2 Esports vs. Infinity eSports

In the first play-in knockout series of the day, G2 Esports found victory over Infinity. It took them four games to close it out, and with how well Infinity played against them, it was extremely competitive and a blast to watch.

For us, all credit needs to go to G2 top laner Martin “Wunder” Hansen. Wunder had a solid summer, showing off every so often that he definitely deserved to be in the conversation for best top laner in the EU LCS. Today, however, he carried the weight of G2 in such a way that we haven’t seen from any other EU player aside from Fnatic’s Rasmus “Caps” Winther all year. After Infinity had fallen, G2 are in the group stage right now.

G-Rex vs. SuperMassive Gaming

Out of all the series of the play-in knockouts, this was probably the only one that fans assumed would be a close contest beforehand—and boy, was that true. Although G-Rex closed it out in four games, SuperMassive forced them to struggle with aggressive late-game decisions and surprisingly tight teamfights, despite being far behind at certain points. In the end, though, G-Rex had the star factor, and they’re on course now to make a splash in the group stage which starts this Wednesday.
