Epic Games acquire Rocket League developers in a surprising deal

Epic Games seems to be determined to spend all of its Fortnite money on games acquisitions, this time, it announced a new deal buying all of Psyonix, the devs behind Rocket League

The new acquisition quickly angered many, with hints that Rocket League could be withdrawn from the Steam store to become fully exclusive to Epic Games Store at the end of this year, although existing players would reserve the right to play without having to buy it again.

The deal will help improve the game in ways that were not possible before, said Psyonix in a statement regarding the deal. Epic will “significantly improve” the game’s esports aspects as well, especially as it has gained a considerable experience in organizing Fortnite events over the past few months.

Although the deal may seem surprising at first glance, Psyonix has contributed to a number of previous Epic games such as Unreal Tournament 2004 and Gears of War, so this collaboration “makes sense in many ways,” according to the company.

Of course, fans were angered from Epic’s constant acquisition of exclusive deals for games that have existed in the past for Steam. Afterall, Epic Games Store is introducing the term “exclusivity” to PC gaming, which was (to a certain extent) absent and only to be seen on home consoles in the conflict between Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo.

However, more details of the deal will be shared by the end of this month by June, when the deal will be finalized making Psyonix wholly owned by Epic Games. What we know now is that there’s no need to worry about Rocket League itself, with the developer promising not to change anything significant in the game that might anger fans, but the game’s fate on Steam platform is still unknown.
