Command & Conquer: Red Alert is coming back at last with a new 4K release
Many fans have had it rough in the world of video games. From titles that got cancelled to studios shut down by poor sales, several beloved franchises have seen a fate that no one desired. Even though Command & Conquer used to be one of those cases in the past, it is about to return from the dead in the best news for its fans since ten years ago
After an original developer hinted at the possibility of revisiting the old games of the series to mark its 25th anniversary, EA today unveiled its first project on reviving the popular strategic series: Remastering Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn and the fan-favorite Command & Conquer: Red Alert, as well as all additional content, in an upgraded package for newer devices similar to Warcraft 3: Reforged with 4K resolution.
The development will be led by Petroglyph Games, a team of former Westwood developers responsible for developing the classic games before closing its doors in 2003. The team includes the original composer of the series Frank Klepacki, who will return to work on his unforgettable tracks in the upcoming Remaster release.
“Here we are 20+ years later and EA has reached out to us regarding C&C. They had decided it was about time to revisit the original C&C games to give the fans what they had been asking for. Petroglyph has many former Westwood employees and is a perfect fit for bringing the original Command & Conquer games back to life,” Command & Conquer co-creator and Petroglyph co-founder Joe Bostic wrote on Reddit.
“I’m excited to revisit the original Command & Conquer and Red Alert for our legacy fans, along with introducing the games to a new audience! Our battle-plan mission is to ‘remaster’ rather than ‘remake’ the original C&C games.”
The reason that the next version is called “Remaster” instead of a complete remake is to bring the classic experience as fans recall it with improved technologies that were not available in 1995 instead of offering a whole new experience. Development details are not yet final, and Bostic wants fans to communicate with the team to give them the suggestions they want.
Lemon Sky Studios will also be involved in the development of the next release, drawing from its expertise in bringing those classic titles to 4K suitable for modern devices. The work has just started, and the development team would like to have this trip with the fans along the way with further details revealed later. Only one thing you should know now is a promise made by EA not to include “Microtransactions” or to pay real money inside the game in the new version.
The news are truly encouraging after fans’ disappointment when EA canceled the Command & Conquer: Generals 2 project a few years ago and then announced a new version of the game called Command & Conquer: Rivals on phones (Which was not positively received at all). We are waiting for more info next year in preparation for the 25th birthday. We won’t say no to a revival of Generals 2!
